Around the world humans are hallucinating after sleepless nights.
In a sterile, underground institute the forecasters keep reporting the same events.
And in the backwoods of Texas, a sixteen-year-old girl is about to be caught up in a fierce, ethereal battle.
Meet Roya Stark. She drowns every night in her dreams, spends her hours reading classic literature to avoid her family’s ridicule, and is prone to premonitions—which are becoming more frequent. And now her dreams are filled with strangers offering to reveal what she has always wanted to know: Who is she? That’s the question that haunts her, and she's about to find out. But will Roya live to regret learning the truth?
Awoken was a very quick read, which I was very thankful for when I was reading it during the 24 hour readathon. It caught my interest from the first page and didn't let go until I finished reading this.
Most of this was probably down to the plot, which was interesting and unique compared to things I've read before. It revolves around a secret society of people who can travel and do things in their dreams, and a girl who is chosen to defeat their greatest enemy. The story was fast paced and intriguing throughout the book, and I found the world that the lucidites lived in fascinating. One of my only complaints about the story line was that although there were a lot of twists and turns that I didn't see coming, some of them seemed a little bit ridiculous and didn't have the necessary foreshadowing to make them feel realistic to me. I also found that, because we are thrown right into the story at the start of the book, I wasn't quite sure what was going on for the first twenty percent or so. I soon figured it out, but I thought some things could've been more clearly explained earlier in the story.
I liked the main character, Roya. She was strong willed and realistic, and even though she could get on my nerves at times I found myself relating to her. I enjoyed the fact that she didn't just accept everything in this new world and although her reactions could be very frustrating it was realistic to how someone would actually act in that situation. I found most of the side characters to be interesting and fun to read about, however a few of them kind of blended together in my head.
The writing style in this book is fast paced and works well for the story. My only problem with it was that sometimes the voice could sound kind of juvenile, but for the most part I enjoyed the style. I really liked how she described the setting of the lucidites institute and made me feel like I was actually there instead of just reading it on a page. I also thought the dream travelling sequences were well described and the concept of dream travelling was imaginative and well thought out.
The book ends with a pretty epic duel, which was just dramatic enough to not feel anti-climactic after the huge build up to it. I did feel that some of the action was kind of confusing and could have been described better, but overall the climax of the book definitely kept me on the edge of my seat and I was satisfied with how things ended. The book does have a sequel, and I definitely want to check it out when I've caught up on all the other books I have to read.
I do have to warn that this book contains the dreaded love triangle, although it didn't get on my nerves as much as I thought I would. The romance wasn't a huge part of the book, not so much that it overwhelmed the story, but it was an element that I could have done without.
Awoken was a very entertaining and intriguing read, with a really imaginative concept. The main character could be frustrating and I wasn't the biggest fan of the romance, but overall I really enjoyed it.
